A little trickery to pass a levy

December 6, 2011 - Frank Robinson
Some things just seem a little sneaky.

The Howland school board has decided to put a an additional operating levy on the March ballot.

That's correct. March.

How many people turn out to vote in March? Probably just the ones in support of the levy. It's an old trick, but it is effective a lot of times.

Being a resident of Howland, I am a little offended by the board's action. The voters spoke loud and clear back in November, with 58 percent of the voters saying no to the levy and 42 percent voting for it.

The levy if passed will cost a homeowner of a home valued at $100,000 about $13 per month, according to officials. Isn't that neat how they break it down by month. That's a little more than $150 per year and there are a lot of homes in Howland valued at much more than $100,000.

Putting the levy on during a low-turnout election is a dirty trick. I predict it will pass this time, because the only people who will be voting will mostly be the folks who depend on the school system financially.

What I don't understand Mr. Editor, why is it a little trickery? Yo know about the levy, I am sure the citizens of Howland know about it. If you don't want it to pass then get off your butt and vote it down. As for trickery, I say you are using trickery by using your influence as an editor to sway peoples vote the way you want them to vote by claiming you have been tricked when in all honesty you have been made a fool of and played right into the other sides hand! Now that's trickery!

When does "NO" mean "NO"?

To school boards, voters saying "NO" just means that they will keep putting levies on the ballot hoping to catch people not paying attention.

"NO" never means changing the business plan to live within income.

Oh come on! Dirty trick? It's a primary election. In Trumbull County those are the only elections that matter. You all vote Democrat anyway. So by your logic a levy can only go on the ballot during the November general election?
