Wow the weather!
Mon, November 17, 2008 @ 3:16PM
It has turned cold, seemingly overnight and the weather is driving me crazy! I hate the cold and can’t seem to get warm from November to April. Last week my husband was doing the weather countdown. Each day he would tell me how many more days of decent weather we could expect. “Tomorrow is the last good day we’ll have,” he said on Thursday. I didn’t believe him until I went out to my car Friday morning and immediately went back inside to get a heavier coat. I’m not ready for this. As I type this right now, just in the last half-hour, the sky darkened considerably and snow is falling as if it is Christmas Eve. No matter how much warning I had, I still wasn’t ready. Some of you may already know that I am moving my workspace from an office in Niles to the newsroom at the Tribune offices in Warren. I expect to be all moved by Thanksgiving weekend.

My Favorite Veteran
Fri, November 14, 2008 @ 10:25AM
One of my assignments this week was to cover the unveiling of the Trumbull County Veterans Memorial in Warren. One of the things missing was my favorite veteran, John Dennis Fitzgerald. He was my Grandpa, and he died in March at the age of 87. As a youngster he was one of the giants of my life and that still holds true today. Grandpa was a technical sergeant and a waist gunner on a B-17 in the 15th Air Force in World War II, flying missions mostly out of Italy. I did not know the extent of his service until I looked at his service record the day he died on my grandma's kitchen table, where it was noted that he was awarded nine bronze stars. I knew little of his service, other than it rained a lot where he was stationed and that he had seen some combat. He did not talk about that much, either. He did not belong to any vets organizations and did not go out of his way to let people know he served.

Review: Vocal Group Hall of Fame concert
Fri, November 7, 2008 @ 0:11AM
The first of four concerts for the Vocal Group Hall of Fame at the Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown was like déjà vu all over again. I wish I was just talking about the music, those songs from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s that are sure to bring back fond memories for the generations that grew up with them or at least discovered them on movie soundtracks or on oldies stations. They were in abundance Thursday with the doo wop of The Duprees and The Spaniels, the girl group sounds of The Crystals, the pristine vocals of Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge, the polished pop of The Letterman and an arena-rattling closing set from Three Dog Night. But the déjà vu Thursday wasn’t the happy kind. The venue was different than the last time the Vocal Hall staged an induction concert in the Mahoning Valley. The shows in 2002 and 2003 were at Cafaro Field in Niles. But once again those familiar songs were bouncing off a lot of empty seats.

Unbelievable!
Wed, November 19, 2008 @ 3:43PM
If what some players are saying, at least half of the players in the NFL weren't aware that gamnes can finish in a tie until Donovan McNabb's admission to his lack of knowledge after the Eagles and Bengals played to a 10-10 deadlock last Sunday. Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers estimated that 50 percent of the players didn't know that regular-season games are considered a tie if no team scores in one quarter of overtime. Browns linebacker Willie McGinest thinks the percentage might be higher. It's hard to believe that Roethlisberger and McGinest are correct in their assessments. I have to believe that well more than 50 percent of hardcore NFL fans know the overtime rule. McNabb followed his revelation by questioning why the league could play a Super Bowl game to a tie. Obviously, he didn't know that playoff games are played until a team wins. Former Browns coach Sam Rutigliano said that the overtime rule is somewhere in the handbook players are given.

Buckeyes catch a huge break
Sat, November 15, 2008 @ 2:43PM
With the score still 23-13 after a scoreless third quarter, Ohio State faced a third-and-four from the Illinois 49 early in the fourth. Terrelle Pryor fired the ball down the right sideline, but too high for Daniel "Boom" Herron, who leaped and had the ball glance off his fingers. Farther downfield was wideout Dane Sanzenbacher, who was leveled by an Illinois defender while the ball was still in the air and after Herron tipped it. An official threw a penalty flag and Illinois was called for a personal foul, giving OSU 15 yards and a first down at the 34. After a false start on right guard Steve Rehring, Pryor ran for 26 yards to the 13, setting up a 12-yard touchdown run by Herron for a 30-13 lead. It started to get chippy after that. On an Illinois punt on the next series, return man Brian Hartline was hit and dropped as he went out of bounds and Illinois was flagged for another personal foul.

Government promises
Fri, November 14, 2008 @ 2:36PM
Is it any wonder people -- especially taxpayers -- are skeptical when it comes to their government? There are good reasons on the local and national levels. Local politicians led people to believe that making the safety services levy permanent would make all the troubles with funding the police and fire departments a thing of the past. Now, dozens of police and firefighters are being laid off, and taxpayers and residents are scratching their heads wondering what happended. The problem is the politicians made too many promises. They didn't leave much in the gray areas. They said if the levy became permanent, there would be nothing to worry about at the police and fire departments. What they didn't see coming was the dismal performance of the economy and following "meltdown." Now people are angry. They feel like they were told a lie. I don't blame them. One person even told me, "They are just ramming this down our throats and there is nothing we can do about it.
