Bar owners face gaming charges
Up a Creek, East Market Street
October 8, 2008
WARREN — The owners of three local bars issued citations in August for permitting gambling in a liquor establishment now are facing criminal charges in Warren Municipal Court.
The Ohio Department of Public Safety’s investigative unit filed charges Tuesday against Up A Creek owners Mark Matash and Scott Rogers, Club 2357 owners Michael Nicholas and Kerry Kish, and Paris Cafe owner Charles List Jr. None of the owners had been served with the charges as of Tuesday afternoon, according to Warren Assistant Law Director Traci Timko Rose.

Satisfying an obsession
Wed, September 24, 2008 @ 1:56PM
I do tend to get obsessed with things and how and what I eat doesn’t escape my compulsions. If I come across a particular meal that is satisfying to me, I might have that same meal over and over several days in a row until I’m ready to move on. I do the same with books and television programs, often to the point that it becomes unhealthy. I used to do it with crossword puzzles too, but I’ve kicked that habit and it was a bad one. It happened several years ago. Every day I would do the crossword in the Tribune, long before I began working for the paper. I tried other crosswords, but none were as satisfying. I couldn’t go to sleep at night until the crossword was completed. If I was stumped on a word and couldn’t complete the puzzle, I saved it for the next day when the answers were printed.

Farewell to Dom
Tue, October 7, 2008 @ 4:12PM
Anyone who is a Youngstown sports fan has to be saddened by the passing of longtime YSU baseball and basketball coach Dom Rosselli, who died Tuesday morning at the age of 93. The Penguins basketball program hasn't been the same since he left. I know they made the leap from D-II to D-1, but there still seems to be something missing. I can remember D-II playoff teams led by the likes of Jeff Covington, and old timers can recall the NAIA days when such standouts as Herb Lake Jr. laced them up for Rosselli. Rosselli also coached the YSU baseball team and sent Dave Dravecky to the major leagues. He amassed over 1,000 wins combined in both sports, including almost 600 wins as the head of the hoops team. He also coached football as an assistant for 21 years under legendary head man Dwight ``Dike' Beede. I never saw his baseball teams play, but his basketball teams were made up of guys who would run through a wall and never quit. Just like their coach.

Austin Pendleton on Paul Newman
Sun, September 28, 2008 @ 2:05PM
A few years ago, I interviewed Austin Pendleton before his first appearance with the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, and he talked about some of the highlights of his acting and directing career. He said one of his favorite film experiences, despite having only a small role, was working on “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge,’’ which starred Paul Newman and his wife, Joanne Woodward. Pendleton is busy directing “Fifty Words” Off-Broadway with Norbert Leo Butz and Elizabeth Marvel. But he took the time to respond to an email and share some of his thoughts on Paul Newman’s death Friday at age 83: “I'm going to miss that guy. I didn't know (him) that well: if you added up the time we ever had in each other's presence it would maybe be a few hours, over all these years. But he had this extraordinary ability to make you feel like you were friends and colleagues. He was funny. He was wry. He was instinctively kind, and thoughtful. He did so much good for so many people.

Taking it easy
Sun, October 5, 2008 @ 10:19AM
Waking up Sunday morning and not preparing to go to a stadium to cover a Browns' game feels strange in early October. The bye week can be good for recharging the internal batteries after covering the Browns day to day since late July, but as a longtime NFL fan I admittedly miss game day. No matter how good or bad the Browns might be, it's still exciting to see the football teed up for another game. My way of dealing with this one day of withdrawl will be to do a few outdoor chores while keeping a close watch on the games. I'm sure I'll log on to the internet a few times to follow the happenings of my fantasy team. The Browns will return to business Monday after getting three days off. The players will have their usual Tuesday off befor getting down to the serious business of preparing for the Monday night game against the New York Giants. This is the earliest the Browns have had their bye since their return to the NFL in 1999.

Herron, Sanzenbacher out for Purdue
Tue, October 7, 2008 @ 10:40PM
Ohio State tailback Dan "Boom" Herron and wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher are unlikely to play against Purdue after receiving concussions during the Buckeyes' 20-17 victory at Wisconsin on Saturday night. Herron, a redshirt freshman from Warren, was dropped on a vicious hit by Badgers safety Jay Valai on a play downfield just after Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor was sacked. There was some concern that it might have been a helmet-to-helmet hit, which in itself is illegal, but no flag was thrown. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel indicated during his Tuesday news conference that it might have been a helmet-to-chin hit. Tressel said Ohio State would list that particular play in its weekly submission to the Big Ten Conference, which asks teams to evaluate certain aspects of its officials' performances. Sanzenbacher also took a hard hit from Valai and three other players after a reception.

Heat bill: What to do, what to do ...
Thu, October 2, 2008 @ 1:39PM
I've been trying to figure out whether or not to lock in my natural gas rate for my home. It's a little confusing. Dominion East Ohio has announced its new rate of $9.90 per 1,000 cubic feet (mcf). Where I live, in Howland, the township has signed a contract with a company called Direct Energy offering residential customers $9.99 per mcf. However, it requires a commitment of one year with Direct Energy and it has a $30 or so fee per month. Then I read a story by the Associated Press. It says 'the natural gas industry says there should be plenty of the fuel for heating this winter and prices are likely to be about the same as last winter.' It goes on to say gas inventories at the start of winter should be 'well above' the five year average. It all comes down to supply and demand. People are cutting back, because of the economy. Try to find a wood-burning stove at a retailer in the area.
