VIENNA — It was a big deal.
By the time he looked out over the throng of people spilling over the rolling green at Crown Hill Burial Park to say goodbye to Air Force Capt. James E. Cross, his brother, Bill Cross, had come to that realization.
Not that his family ever underestimated the airman’s final sacrifice for his country. They just thought that too many years had passed for most people to notice, Bill Cross said.
A small, private memorial service probably would suffice, they thought.
They couldn’t have been more mistaken.

It is still apple season
Fri, October 10, 2008 @ 4:24PM
Last week I was able to visit an apple orchard during the state Master Gardener conference. We went to Ashtabula County where there are lots of covered bridges (including the newly constructed longest covered bridge in the country, but there are also lots of vineyards and apple orchards. This is the perfect time of year to take advantage of the harvest. Apples are inexpensive, especially if you have your own trees, and can be preserved in any number of ways. One of my favorite ways to preserve apples is to make apple butter in my crockpot. It is so simple and while it simmers and thickens, you can be doing any number of other things instead of standing over the stove, using lots of gas or electric, stirring the mixture to the right consistency. I did learn from my crockpot apple butter experience, that you do have to take the lid off during the last few hours of cooking. Otherwise, the moisture stays in the pureed apples and it doesn’t thicken.

In trouble like a grownup
Thu, October 9, 2008 @ 3:42PM
Michael Davis still looks like a kid, the only difference being as his capital murder trial began Thursday that he looked more scared as opposed to being lost. He even displayed some emotion, weeping as the 911 tape of the fire he is accused of setting that killed six members of the Crawford family at their Stewart Avenue home in January was played for the jury. That was one of the most uncomfortable moments of my journalistic career, even though I listened to the tape the day after the fire in the comforts of the newsroom, but that was back in January when I was at my desk and dealing with two or three other stories and making my deadline. In journalism, almost everything loses perspective on deadline. Thursday, I heard again Retia Crawford shriek into the phone, ``I don't want them to die!' I was unsettled as almost the entire courtroom was and it was hard to maintain my composure, and I was not the only one, as the jurors squirmed and one wiped away a tear.

Review: Jerry Seinfeld at Stambaugh Auditorium
Fri, October 10, 2008 @ 10:54PM
During the question-and-answer period at the end of his standup comedy show at Stambaugh Auditorium Friday, Jerry Seinfeld didn’t promise much for the future. “At this point in my life, I’m old, I’m rich and I’m tired,” he said. I don’t know about that, but he’s still one of the best standup comics in the business. Seinfeld came up in the early ‘80s, when the popularity of his chosen profession exploded. But just as fast, standup comedy seemed to be reduced to a stepping stone, a path to a sitcom, a movie career, a best-selling book. Seinfeld had a pretty successful sitcom himself – maybe a few people might remember it. But when it ended, he went back to performing live with a vengeance. Instead of coasting on his celebrity, Seinfeld probably is a better comedian today than the guy who attracted that sitcom deal from NBC nearly 20 years ago.

Playing hurt
Fri, October 10, 2008 @ 11:44PM
It's amazing how different players can be in terms of playing through pain. Kellen Winslow has been banged up more than any player I've seen in a Browns' uniform, yet he does everyhting in his power to get on the field. Then there's receiver Donte Stallworth, who hasn't played in one game this season because of a quadricep injury. I get the feeling that Winslow wouldn't have missed four games with a pulled quadricep. I'm not sure he would have missed one game. Winslow is now facing the difficult challenge of trying to play Monday night against the New York Giants while battling an undisclosed illness. He spent Thursday and Friday night in the Cleveland Clinic and was listed as 50/50 for the game. Winslow is a player that fans either love or hate. Some hate him because he foolishly wrecked his motorcycle in 2005, an accident that cost him an entire season and nearly his career.

Herron, Sanzenbacher out for Purdue
Tue, October 7, 2008 @ 10:40PM
Ohio State tailback Dan "Boom" Herron and wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher are unlikely to play against Purdue after receiving concussions during the Buckeyes' 20-17 victory at Wisconsin on Saturday night. Herron, a redshirt freshman from Warren, was dropped on a vicious hit by Badgers safety Jay Valai on a play downfield just after Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor was sacked. There was some concern that it might have been a helmet-to-helmet hit, which in itself is illegal, but no flag was thrown. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel indicated during his Tuesday news conference that it might have been a helmet-to-chin hit. Tressel said Ohio State would list that particular play in its weekly submission to the Big Ten Conference, which asks teams to evaluate certain aspects of its officials' performances. Sanzenbacher also took a hard hit from Valai and three other players after a reception.

Heat bill: What to do, what to do ...
Thu, October 2, 2008 @ 1:39PM
I've been trying to figure out whether or not to lock in my natural gas rate for my home. It's a little confusing. Dominion East Ohio has announced its new rate of $9.90 per 1,000 cubic feet (mcf). Where I live, in Howland, the township has signed a contract with a company called Direct Energy offering residential customers $9.99 per mcf. However, it requires a commitment of one year with Direct Energy and it has a $30 or so fee per month. Then I read a story by the Associated Press. It says 'the natural gas industry says there should be plenty of the fuel for heating this winter and prices are likely to be about the same as last winter.' It goes on to say gas inventories at the start of winter should be 'well above' the five year average. It all comes down to supply and demand. People are cutting back, because of the economy. Try to find a wood-burning stove at a retailer in the area.
