Man sentenced to eight years in $8M heist

AKRON — A man who stole about $8 million from a Liberty armored car company where he worked was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison.
Roger Dillon, 23, of Youngstown, told the judge that the heist was a stupid thing to do.

Internet tools for managing meals

It’s amazing the things that are available on the Internet that help with managing meals and meal planning. Inevitably, the most difficult decisions we make on a daily basis involve what to prepare for our meals. More time is spent worrying about what we eat than is spent planning our financial future. But there are places out there in the Web world that can help. Once such place is www.mealsmatter.org. This Web site has many tools available for meal planning, recipe storage and tips on diet and nutrition. You simply need to register, with nothing more than your name and e-mail address, as well as creating a unique password to enable you to get to the information you input onto your meal planning list and shopping lists. You can choose to receive a monthly newsletter about health and nutrition or you can opt out. I find this tool extremely convenient for meal planning. The site offers a page for listing three meals each day for a week.

Not too many things freak me out on the job, but looking for a comment from someone who knew Saturday's homicide victim was one of them. I went to the address listed for 25-year-old Ricardo Moctezuma on Burlington Avenue on the North Side, who was killed early Saturday morning after an argument at a Poland Avenue bar. As I have written before, going to the home of homicide victims is not one of my favorite things to do. It is necessary sometimes to show our readers what kind of person the victim was and how such a tragedy can affect someone. I am always nervous when I do these and the reactions I have gotten have run the gamut: I've encountered nonstop sobbing, stoicism, and even thanks from people who have said they appreciate someone trying to tell people about their loved one. I have also gotten refusals, ranging from polite to bitter to colorful language.

DVD recommendation: "Be Kind Rewind'

I wasn’t sure what to expect from “Be Kind Rewind.” The reviews were mostly positive but seemed to be filled with faint praise. I missed the press screening and never got around to catching it during its brief theatrical run this winter, but I was curious to see it, mainly because I loved director Michel Gondry’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” I figured it would be one of those Netflix choices I’d watch by myself. But when the kids heard Jack Black was in it, they were curious to see it. My wife – who’s been known to give me a look that translates to, “What possibly made you decide to bring this home?,” at some of my DVD choices– also decided to watch. I was apprehensive, because when I can tell someone else isn’t enjoying a movie, it can color my own viewing experience.

There are a few changes in the way the Browns are approaching training camp this year. The first thing you might have noticed is that the first day of camp is on a Wednesday (July 23). The Browns usually open on a Friday, but the earlier opening is because the Browns open the preseason on a Thursday (Aug. 8 at home against the New York Jets) instead of a Saturday. NFLPA rules don't allow veterans to begin camp until at least 15 days before the first preseason game. The Thursday game makes the Wednesday start of camp possible. Camp will end sooner this year. Last year camp didn't end until the Wednesday after the second preseason game. This year it will end Saturday, Aug. 16, two days before the second preseason game Monday night at the New York Giants. Another noticeable change is that the Browns will have nine two-day sessions instead of the seven in previous years. The idea seems to be to sandwich more practice time in a shorter time span.

Stephen Procner, a left-handed pitcher with Aberdeen of the New York-Penn League, is set to return home to the Mahoning Valley when the Ironbirds arrive in Niles on Tuesday to begin a three-game series against the Scrappers. Procner is a Girard High School graduate. He pitched at Cleveland State University. Procner doesn't a decision in five appearances, including one start, for Aberdeen this season. He has allowed 17 hits and just two walks in 16 innings, and he has struck out eight. Procner's ERA is 3.94. His last appearance, on July 14, was a start on the road against the Batavia Muckdogs. He worked four innings, allowed five hits and three runs, and struck out two. Aberdeen is a Baltimore Orioles affiliate owned by Cal Ripken Jr. Procner pitched at Bluefield (W.Va.), in the Appalachian League, last season. He was exclusively a starter and was 3-3 with a 4.07 ERA in 13 appearances.

I’m using this blog to say so long to a storied employee of the Trib. Steve Oravecz is leaving, as today is his last day. I also want to share a comment I received about him, but that will come lower in this column. Steve has been here more than 25 years, since 1981. He has held almost every position in the newsroom, from staff writer to editorial page editor, to copy desk chief to politics editor. He has been dedicated all these years to gathering and presenting the news for the residents, and readers, in the area. Now, to the comment I mentioned earlier. I received a letter earlier this week from Warren Councilman-at-large Bob “Doby” Dean. Here it is: “We will surely miss you Tony Snow ä sorry, Stephen Oravecz, you arenát even close. “I never met Tony Snow, I hear from all those who he touched he always had a gleam in his eye and a warm "How Ya Doin'" as he greeted everyone.
