Cobalt sales better, but still down

Sales of Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 small cars by General Motors Corp. to dealers didn’t exactly rebound in December, but they weren’t as bad as they had been the previous two months, raising local hopes that the worst of the drought may be over.
Cobalt sales were down 27.3 percent in December to 12,786 compared to the same month in 2007. G5 sales were off 1.8 percent to 2,464 in the same period. Both fared better than GM’s 31 percent drop for the month as the industry ended its worst year since 1992.

Explaining the pyramid

When visiting www.mypyramid.gov, you might be a little confused about where to start. On the left side of the opening page are several links that will take you to areas that are designed to help get started on the mypyramid program. The menu planner requires sign up and registration, but there no charge to participate and you will never be asked to fill out your name, address or other personal information. To register, you will be asked to devise an ID and password for future log-ins. This is because the menu planner is strictly yours to use to design your own daily food intake. It’s there if you choose to use it or if you feel you need the extra help, but isn’t necessary to find out about the program itself. The next item on the list is mypyramid tracker. This link will request your ID and password and is helpful in analyzing your food and exercise program. Skip down to the fourth item on the list, My Pyramid Plan.

My Top 10 for 2008

Tis the season for top 10 lists galore, and we here at the Tribune are no exception, as we will be running our top 10 stories of the year this weekend. But I have also compiled my own top 10 stories. Without further ado, here goes. 1. Joe Kaluza. Far and away the biggest story of the year for me. Robbed and paralyzed the day after Easter by a couple who only got $300, the former manager of the South Avenue Kentucky Fried Chicken spent months in a Cleveland hospital. The couple accused of robbing him set a new low in contempt by courtroom observers. That was heightened the day Kaluza testified in their trial, as he was ushered into the courtroom and testified in a clear, calm voice how he was bushwhacked by the pair. Afterwards he stayed in the courtroom, the ventilator breathing for him a constant reminder of the treachary that almost ended his life all because someone was being evicted and did not want to get a job to pay her rent.

Carousel Dinner Theatre shuts its doors

Carousel Dinner Theatre announced over the weekend that it is canceling its 2009 season, which was supposed to start Wednesday with “Life Is But a Dream.” According to a press release issued this morning, “For the past year, the economy has materially affected the theater’s attendance and its ability to make cost adjustments to keep pace with the decrease in attendance. The final tipping point became the reversal of certain stakeholders’ written or verbal promises that would have had a major impact on the theatre’s continuance for the 2009 season and beyond.” The theater employed about 150 people. The Carousel, which opened in Ravenna in 1973, moved to its current location in Akron in 1988, according to its Web site. The press release urges customers who purchased tickets or gift certificates with their credit cards to contact their credit card company to process a full refund. No word yet on what those who paid cash for upcoming tickets should do.

Eric's the man?

There was a report Friday that Browns owner Randy Lerner was impressed with his interview of ex-New York Jets coach Eric Mangini and that Mangini tops his list to replace Romeo Crennel as coach. It doesn't surprise me that Mangini might be the choice. When Lerner met privaterly with reporters last Monday, he didn't know at the time that the Jets had fired Mangini. When someone told him that Mangini had been fired, Lerner had a look of pleasant surprise. When asked about Mangini, Lerner indicated that he would like to interview him. It happened two days later in New York City. Mangini meets the requirement that Lerner and most fans seem to want -- a person with head coaching experience in the NFL. Mangini directed the Jets the last three seasons, leading the way to two winning sesaons and one playoff appearance.

The candidates

So Bill Cowher doesn't want to come to Cleveland. It seems most Browns fans would have embraced the former Cleveland backup linebacker and special teams coach, even with his 15 seasons as the coach of the rival Pittsburgh Steelers at the top of his resume. But it's OK. Cowher would have been a good hire, but he didn't invent football and he didn't radically change the game in any way, shape or form. He was, however, a solid caretaker of an established NFL team for years. But would Cowher have been the right guy for a team that is about to begin rebuilding ... again? Perhaps. But perhaps not. We'll apparently never know. One thing for sure, the Browns' search for a new coach and general manager shouldn't drag long into January. Owner Randy Lerner knows - or should know - there are only so many rebuilding projects a city and fan base can handle before they become ambivalent about a team.

Odd differences in food safety

I noticed an odd contrast in food safety regulations the other day, and it involves strict rules at a local store and nearly unregulated food processed in China. Neither of these two cases is connected in any way. The owner of Shadi's Food Market in Warren Township says he was being unfairly targeted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. The story we had about it a few weeks ago said the agency had a problem with how the market was labeling its meat products. Then I stumbled across a story by The Associated Press out of China about additives they have decided need to be banned. It said Chinese officials had decided that commonly used dyes, insecticides and drain cleaners could no longer be used as food additives. Yes, you read that correctly. But looking at the two situations -- and looking at the big picture -- it sure seems that the owners at Shadi's have a point. Regulations here certainly are much tougher than the regulations from other places.
