Nemenz IGA closes Hubbard market

September 21, 2008

HUBBARD — The Nemenz IGA permanently closed its doors after losing money for more than a year while critics conducted informational pickets telling potential customers that the Nemenz company refused to hire former union employees of the store it replaced. Family and friends of the non-union Nemenz employees recently picketed the union pickets, saying the store’s owner, Henry Nemenz Sr., warned the company would close the Hubbard store if the union did not stop and allow the store to operate without interference. On Monday, Nemenz kept his promise. Nemenz closed the store this week, blaming, in part, the union pickets for driving away business from the store. Nemenz IGA store chain took over the former Patton IGA in April 2007. Former employees, who were members of Food & Commercial Workers Local 880, in September 2007, began picketing the store saying that the new ownership would not hire the former union employees.
