Nobody here but us chickens

September 28, 2008

LIBERTY — Several 6-foot roosters are crowing as they travel their way through Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The oversized sculptures are the creation of Liberty residents who entered them in the 2008 Canfield Fair sculpture competition in the fair’s Fine Arts Building. It was the first sculpture contest given at the Fine Arts building. The rooster was chosen for the first sculpture project at the Fine Arts Building because it historically has been the symbol of the Canfield Fair. Kathryn Infante, creator of “Rooster Metallica,” one of the sculptures on display, says all of the would-be artists are first-time sculpturers. That did not affect their competitive spirit in making the sculptures or the fun they had making them. “We really supported one another in this project,” Infante said. Eric Margala’s “Thaddius,” won second place at the Canfield Fair. The bird is made of all metal parts and was made by Roy Infante, who is Eric’s brother-in-law.
