Women’s Park statue dedicated

WARREN — With proud posture and smiling eyes, the Every Woman statue has been dedicated and is ready to greet visitors to Warren’s Women’s Park.

“We want to dedicate this to all women who have had an impact, in their own way, on our community,” said Kay Fisher Sunday at the dedication ceremony and reception, held in the Harriet Taylor Upton House.

The statue, meant as homage to the history of the women’s movement in Trumbull County, was part of the nearly $130,000 fundraising and donation campaign to build the park, located across Mahoning Avenue from the Upton house.

Susan Herman of Girard, a member and past president of the Upton Association who helps organize maintenance and cleanup efforts at the park, introduced the event. In designing the statue, Herman said the committee was hoping to show a strong, young woman of intelligence. She holds a book behind her back, and she looks as if she’s just read something wonderful she can’t wait to share, Herman said. She should also fit in with the historic surroundings and possess a fair amount of beauty.

“Not drop-dead gorgeous, just beautiful,” Herman said.

The park was created to honor Upton, a staunch suffragist who lived in Warren most of her life. Upton fought for women’s rights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The 5-foot-7 bronze Every Woman statue was unveiled in the park last month.

The Women’s Park is located along Mahoning Avenue N.W., between the Kinsman House and City Hall. Along with the statue, it features a brook and walkways inscribed with pavers that people could buy to honor the women in their lives.

After the dedication, visitors were treated to a reception in the Upton House, catered by the Blue Iris Cafe; brioche, fresh fruit, chicken and egg salad sandwiches were served along with ladies’ fingers and Key Lime tart, brownies and caramel cookies.
