HOWLAND - Arnold A. Danes, 82, died at 8:23 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at St. Joseph Health Center following an extended illness.
He was born April 1, 1930, in Niles, the son of Giacomo and Elmirinda Carlini Danes.
A 1947 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, he attended Newbury College and Youngstown State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran, honorably serving in Korea from March 15, 1951, to Dec. 16, 1952. He retired in 1985 after 30 years of heroic service as a fireman in the City of Niles Fire Department.

He was a member of St. Stephen Church and the Army and Navy Garrison in McKinley Heights. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and Detroit Lions fan. He worked hard for his family all his life. After retiring as a public servant, he worked part-time in the pizza industry, retiring at age 81.
Arnold was beloved and cherished by his family and is survived by his wife, Dorothy Timko Danes, whom he married on Feb. 14, 1953; two daughters, Karen S. Danes of Buena Vista, Pa., and Stephanie (William) Danes Smith of Howland; a son, George (Lynn) Danes of Howland; a brother, John Danes of Niles; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Sue Scarnecchia, Ann Danes, Florence Massari and Sophie Lubich; and four brothers, Sam, Dominic, Thomas and Paul Danes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Church. The Rev. Thomas Kraszewski will be the celebrant.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen Church for a Mass offering or the St. Vincent dePaul Society.
