NEWTON FALLS - Salvatore "Sam" Giuliano, 84, of Newton Falls passed to eternal life Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at his residence.
Salvatore was born Feb. 2, 1928, in Gioiosa Marea, Sicily, the son of Rosario and Marianunzia Giuliano. Throughout the years, he was known to family and friends as "Sam."
While Sam's father was in the United States seeking to better the lives of the family, Sam worked in Sicily to help provide for the family in his father's absence. The entire family would eventually be reunited in America.
Having established a strong work ethic, Sam was employed by Copperweld Steel and later by Rockwell International, where he retired from his duties in 1976. While working at Rockwell, Sam also worked at the Aloha Club and Carlo's Restaurant in Newton Falls.
On Nov. 4, 1957, Salvatore Giuliano and Gaetana "Katie" Riccardi were united in marriage in St. Amelia Catholic Church in Tonawanda, N.Y. Shortly after their marriage, Sam and Katie opened Sam's Pizza Shop in Newton Falls on Valentine's Day in 1958. With the couple's hard work and perseverance, their pizzas are still a staple to the community after 54 years.
Family gatherings were an important aspect in Sam's life. He enjoyed preparing the Sunday and holiday dinners, playing cards and dancing with his wife at many family occasions. He also enjoyed traveling with the family, returning often to the family home in Gioiosa Marea, Sicily.
Sam was a parishioner of St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish in Newton Falls.
Memories of Sam will be carried on by his caring and loving family, his sons and his daughters-in-law, Anthony and Donna, Richard and Peggy, Salvatore "Chip," Robert and Michelle and John and Tonya; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Stuart Kavalec; his grandchildren, David, Isabella, Michael, Joseph, Angela, Samantha, Nicole, John, Liam Giuliano, Nicholas and Gina Kavalec and his great-grandson, Braedon Giuliano.
Preceding Sam were his parents and his siblings, Angelina Palermo, Francesco "Frank" Giuliano and Vincenzina Chiappone.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 4, 2012, at the Borowski Memorial Home in Newton Falls, where a prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish in Newton Falls with the Rev. Thomas Ungashick as celebrant and the Rev. Richard J. Pentello as concelebrant.
To honor Sam for his service in the United States Army, the Newton Falls Veterans Honor Guard will conduct a military service in St. Joseph's Cemetery, where Sam will be laid to rest.
