DEAR EDITOR:
SCOPE was an idea that started more than 50 years ago by Roberta Graham, and at that time a small group of interested persons attended a formation meeting at the the YWCA. My grandmother, Anna Turner was in that group and remained a member of the SCOPE organization until her death at 95 years of age.
During the early years, SCOPE had a chorus, a kitchen band and other enjoyable things there for the retired seniors of the community and surrounding area. There was a great need for these people to have a place where they could come and enjoy each other's company, so naturally SCOPE became a very popular place in downtown Warren.
I, myself, served on the board of SCOPE, and during those years many positive projects took place, some of which I was a part.
The people who attend our centers are still getting together. We haven't lost a member because of the press scandal. All of our people have offered to help, and they have helped in one way or another.
With the basic idea of SCOPE still in existence I would ask that the Tribune be more positive in its reporting. We all know what has happened in the past, but please be forward-looking enough to realize the need to continue in a positive light, and not the need to constantly refer to the past misdeeds. Give the leaders there your support for a change.
What I don't understand is the constant negative press SCOPE has been getting. Understandably, there have been problems with the prior management not doing a their job, but it's time to put that aside and go on with a futuristic attitude.
Enough is enough. Isn't it time to give our new director and his staff a chance to get our centers reorganized and turn things around? C'mon Tribune, change your attitude and start reporting the good stuff that's going on.
There have been other organizations with "problems." Hardly a word said in the press. I think you're more than a little biased when it comes to our beloved SCOPE.
