Man who punched officer gets 10 years
YOUNGSTOWN - A man convicted this summer of punching a police officer was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday.
Shawn Green, 36, was sentenced by Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge James Evans after a trial in which a jury found him guilty of felonious assault, resisting arrest and possession of cocaine.
Green was accused of punching and breaking the jaw of officer Bridget Quinn as she responded to a disturbance at O'Malley's Pub.
He also injured another officer, Patrick Mulligan, who subdued Green with a Taser.
Green was found guilty in July.
Police shoot dog after man reports bite
YOUNGSTOWN - Officers fired several times at a pit bull after it bit a man on the East Side about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, a police report states.
Officers were called to back up a humane officer who was responding to a man who had been bitten by a stray dog at the corner of Jacobs Road and Arcadia Street.
The humane agent said he shot the dog with a tranquilizer, but it was still very aggressive.
Police tracked the animal to a home on Edgar Street and put it down with a shotgun. The dog was taken to be tested for rabies.
The man who was bitten, whose name was not available, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment.
Trial date changed for accused child killer
WARREN - The trial of a Warren woman accused in the death of her 16-month-old daughter was changed this week from Monday to Dec. 10.
Joy Denise Hodge, 28, 1535 Transylvania Ave. S.E., has remained in jail following the Sept. 6 death of A'nana Brantley.
She is facing charges of murder, felonious assault and endangering children.
Warren police were called to the Transylvania Ave. home on Sept. 6, 2011, for a report of a deceased baby in an upstairs bedroom. Officers found Brantley dead, and Hodge was charged nine days later.
The murder indictment states Hodge caused the death of Brantley "as a proximate result of Hodge committing or attempting to commit a felony of the first or second degree, or felonious assault, or endangering children."
Man faces numerous charges after fight
CORTLAND - A Youngstown man could face charges today in Central District Court after sheriff's deputies said he fought with his mother in Mecca, took her van and crashed it into a house in Champion on Wednesday morning.
Thomas Francis, 36, of Florencedale Avenue, was being treated at a local hospital for a back injury following his arrest by Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers on charges of failure to control and operating a vehicle impaired.
Troopers said those charges are to be filed in Warren Municipal Court after he struck a house on Champion Avenue near North Park Avenue.
Charges of domestic violence and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle have been filed in the Cortland court by deputies following the altercation with his mother on Edgewater Drive.
