Edward P. Wanchick 1927-2012

RAVENNA - Edward P. Wanchick, 85, passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born Jan. 19, 1927, in Ravenna.

He graduated from Ravenna High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 45th Reconnaissance Squadron, in World War II. He was the Knights of Columbus Portage County Veteran of the Year 2009-2010.

Ed worked for many years for the Portage County Engineers, became a registered professional surveyor and then ran a successful land surveying business until retiring in 2010. He was always ready to help anyone in need; he volunteered his services at the Knights of Columbus bingo. He enjoyed traveling, going to many casinos and visiting family and friends.

Ed attended Immaculate Conception Church and was a part-time usher. He was a member of the Ravenna VFW, Moose, and the Elks, United Methodist Bible study group and the Rubber City Harmonica Club.

Ed is survived by his wife, Betty; a sister, Veronica Vaughn of Burton; a daughter, Rebecca A. Wanchick of Denver; two sons, John B. (Margie) Wanchick and Michael O. Wanchick, both of Columbus; a stepson, Darrin Polifrone of Cuyahoga Falls; a stepdaughter, Andrea Stanley of Ravenna; a grandson, Weston Edward Wanchick of Columbus; seven grandsons, Jeff (Mindy) Stanley of Southington, Edward and Richard Lizer of Denver, Joel, Dominic, and Alex and Anthony Polifrone of Cuyahoga Falls; a granddaughter, Jessica Polifrone of Cuyahoga Falls; and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Dolores (Ashley) Yakubek of Cortland, Margie (Charles) Fowler of Garrettsville, Rose Clark of Windham, Mary (Bud) Reed of Newton Falls, Frank (Marian) Yaratch of Deerfield, Edward (Betsy) Yaratch of Sandusky, Eva (Jim) McCarty of Cortland, David (Shirley) Yaratch of Garrettsville, Arthur (Marcia) Yaratch of Las Vegas and Frances Basile of Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Genevieve Wanchick; a son, Edward (Chick) Wanchick; and a granddaughter, Amber Lizer.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. John Madden at 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Church, 409 W. Main St., Ravenna.

Entombment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
