YOUNGSTOWN - A 4-year-old boy was the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head Friday morning, according to a Youngstown police report.
According to police, Tristian Jackson, 610 Kendis Circle, accidentally shot himself through his right cheek with a 9-mm pistol.
Police responded to St. Elizabeth Health Center's emergency room about 8 a.m., where they found a green Chevrolet Suburban with small blood spots on the rear driver's side seat parked outside.
Humility of Mary Health Partners police told city officers the boy was driven to the hospital.
At the hospital, police found a Rachelle Daniels in the waiting room with blood on her grey hooded sweatshirt and who appeared to be distraught. The report did not say how she is related to Jackson.
She told police she had been sleeping on the couch and Jackson was in another bedroom where he had been sleeping alone after his father, Antwan Jackson, left for work.
Daniels told police she was awoken by the sound of a gunshot about 7:30 a.m. and ran to the bedroom where she found the boy crying and bleeding from his face.
She said her other brother called 911 but she put the boy in the car and drove him to the hospital before police had a chance to respond.
Police saw the boy at the hospital and reported that he was talking and crying and that his wound was still bleeding.
Antwan Jackson arrived from work and told police his son had slept in bed with him and was still asleep when he left for work at 6 a.m. Police asked if he owned a gun, and he told them he kept a loaded 9-mm under the bed.
Police took the gun as evidence. The report does not say whether anyone was arrested or that any charges have been filed. Witnesses did go to the station for further questioning.
Later in the morning, the boy was listed in critical but stable condition.
