Voters should support Champion school levy

October 21, 2012

DEAR EDITOR:

Champion Schools will have a levy on the ballot this election. I'd like to share why I believe that passage of the levy is essential.

I had two children who got their basic education at Champion Schools. They have both gone on to advanced college degrees, one a master's in counseling and the other an MBA from Wharton. They have successful careers, healthy families, and are contributing members of society. The foundation for their success was Champion Schools.

The second reason I believe the schools deserve our support is that the school board has for years been comprised of very good stewards of the system and our money. If they tell me we need more funding for schools, I believe them. We often think of government as those people in Washington who seem currently unable to decide on whether or not to tie their shoes. But our real public servants are those we elect to local office, our neighbors who give of their time to help our communities. And this school board has hired a commendable group of administrators and faculty who all understand our current tough economy.

The third and most important reason I believe we need to pass the levy is the education of our students. I am retired now, and these are the people who will be running my world in the very near future. I want them to be just as smart, educated and prepared as possible.
