WARREN - A 3-year-old Warren boy was listed in serious condition at Akron Children's Hospital Friday after he was struck by a vehicle Thursday evening near his home.
Marcus A. Chaney Jr., 1000 Commerce N.W., reportedly was playing outside with other children about 7:30 p.m. when he crossed the street and was struck by the passing vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle, Shaquille D. Chatmon, 18, of Kensington N.W., has not been charged with any offense.
A Warren police report said Chatmon was driving an SUV south on Commerce from Northwest Boulevard and noticed several children playing in the front yard of 1001 Commerce. Chatmon told officers he was traveling between 10 and 15 mph when Chaney darted into the roadway.
The report states the boy ran into the road with a toy sword in his hand and while wearing dark clothing.
Chatmon said he swerved to try to miss the boy, but the right front bumper of the vehicle hit the child, knocking him two houses south of the point of impact in front of 978 Commerce, according to reports.
Chatmon and three people in the SUV remained at the scene until police arrived and Chaney's parents, Marcus Chaney Sr. and Destani Parks, grabbed their child and started to take him to a local hospital.
The couple and the injured child encountered a police officer in his cruiser at the intersection of Northwest Boulevard and Parkman Road N.W.
''The parents were screaming and the child was crying intensely,'' the police report said.
The mother was holding the boy with a towel wrapped around his head and she jumped into the cruiser to go to the hospital.
The officer said he advised Trumbull Memorial Hospital through a dispatcher that the boy had an apparent head injury and was complaining of a leg injury.
