WARREN - The mother of a 3-year-old boy hit by a car Thursday evening said he is getting better.
Destani Parks, the mother of Marcus Chaney Jr. of Commerce Avenue N.E., said her son has a skull fracture and broken femur. He may have to have a full-body cast, but she said doctors told her they expect him to make a full recovery.
She also said she is doing better since the doctors told her that her son would get better.
The boy was playing outside with friends about 7:30 p.m. when he was hit, his mother said.
A Warren police report states that Shaquille D. Chatmon, 18, of Kensington N.W., was driving an SUV south on Commerce from Northwest Boulevard and noticed several children playing in the front yard of 1001 Commerce.
Chatmon told officers he was traveling between 10 and 15 mph when Chaney darted into the roadway. The report states the boy ran into the road with a toy sword in his hand and while wearing dark clothing.
Chatmon said he swerved to try to miss the boy, but the right front bumper of the vehicle hit the child, knocking him two houses south of the point of impact in front of 978 Commerce, according to reports.
Chatmon has not been charged with any offense.
