Agnes Benita Vahey 1936-2012

SCHERERVILLE, Ind. - Agnes Benita Vahey, 76, formerly of Youngstown, passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012.

She was born Sept. 30, 1936, in Niles, the daughter of John and Agnes Cassidy.

Benita earned her B.S. degree in education from Youngstown State University, where she met Thomas J. Vahey, her loving husband of 53 years. She taught math and English in the Youngstown area, and then did what she loved and did the best - taking on the role of devoted mother and loving wife.

She had a caring manner, patience, enduring strength and selfless love that she shared with everyone. She remains an inspiration to many. Benita also enjoyed spending time with fellow members of the Youngstown Garden Club, Engineering Auxiliary and the Lake Central swim team concessions. She enjoyed baking delicious dinners, pies, cakes and cookies. She created and ran her own candy-making business, U-Can-Do, Ent. She enjoyed researching our family genealogy.

She is loved by everyone who knew her and will be missed more than words can describe. She lives on through her children and grandchildren. We will all miss her.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas J. Vahey; her children, John T. (Joahna) Vahey, Jean B. Vahey, M.D., James W. (Minh) Vahey, M.D., Edward P. (Imelda) Vahey, D.M.D., M.S. and Barb (Dick) Lulay; her grandchildren, Celeste, Ernest, Gage, Breana, Grace, Hannah, Matthew, Nicole, Jason, Kristina, Matthew, Patrick, Caitlin and Riley; her brother, John James (Georgia) Cassidy, Ph.D.; and numerous other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Frances Cassidy, and her parents.

Visitation will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave. (Route 41) in St. John, Ind. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael Church in Shchererville, Ind. A prayer service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria, Ill.
