MINERAL RIDGE - Many businesses abide by the age-old code of "you break it, you buy it."
When it comes to a new business, you buy things to break.
Wrecking Room LLC held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting grand opening Friday morning in Mineral Ridge for the unorthodox idea of stress relief through destruction.
The idea came to owner Greg Scholl while watching television late one night.
"A guy was cleaning out an old room and just smashing old junk," Scholl said from the new business at 3781 Main St. "He made the comment that the fun part was smashing the stuff; the bad part was having to clean it up.
"I thought why not give people the fun, and we'll take care of the rest."
The business consists of three rooms filled with chairs, tables, plates, cups and even small appliances like computer monitors and radios. Customers can purchase the room at rates of four minutes for $20 up to 12 minutes for $40.
Equipped with a bat and covered with protective gear including a helmet, glasses and pullovers, customers can then destroy anything contained in the room for their allotted time.
Each room also has a safety window for friends and family to watch the organized destruction. Sessions are recorded, and DVDs can be purchased. Music of the customer's choice can also be played in each room for as long as the session lasts.
"There are a few benefits to this kind of thing," Scholl said. "Obviously, it is a great stress relief and you can take out your aggression on the room. The other thing is customers will find it to be a great workout, especially for cardio.
"You are having fun, beating stress and exercising all in one."
The Wrecking Room LLC will be open noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
