GIRLS BASKETBALL
CANFIELD 40, HICKORY 30: YOUNGSTOWN - Canfield's owned the fourth quarter of a non-conference matchup with Hickory, handing the Hornets their first loss of the season in the second annual Lariccia's See Them Rise High School Basketball Showcase at the Covelli Centre.
Canfield (15-1) overcame a 10-point, first-quarter deficit. The Cardinals turned the tables on Hickory (11-1) by outscoring them 13-3 in the second quarter. The game was tied going into the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals outscored Hickory, 18-8, to pull away.
Canfield's Sabrina Mangapora led all scorers with 22 points. She also added a game-high 17 rebounds for a double-double. Rachel Tinkey added 12 points for the Cardinals.
Holly Grober paced Hickory with 14 points.
LORDSTOWN 67, HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN 14: COLUMBIANA - Lordstown held the Lions to six first-half points in a dominating non-conference win.
Sarah Cash led the Red Devils (13-2) with 17 points. She scored 10 in the first half, when Lordstown went up, 42-6. Mary Bennett added 12. Overall, 11 players scored for the Red Devils, who play at Bristol on Thursday.
Phoebe Nabors, Ginny Bu rgess and Leah Morelly all scored four points for Heartland Christian (2-13).
STRUTHERS 66, FARRELL 31: YOUNGSTOWN - Ashley Hefferon and Brittaney Zupko helped Struthers roll past Farrell as part of the second annual Lariccia's See Them Rise High School Basketball Showcase at the Covelli Centre.
Hefferon and Zupko combined for 34 points, outscoring Farrell by themselves. Hefferon led all scorers with 19 points, while Zupko contributed 15 points and nine rebounds. The Wildcats (13-4) outrebounded Farrell, 28-10, and led 29-10 at the half.
Bria Gambill scored a team-best 15 for the Steelers (8-6).
BOYS BASKETBALL
HICKORY 60, STRUTHERS 33: YOUNGSTOWN - Three players scored in double figures for Hickory, and the Hornets hit nine 3-pointers in cruising past Struthers in the second annual Lariccia's See Them Rise High School Basketball Showcase at the Covelli Centre.
Hickory (11-2) led 33-16 at the half, led by Matt Votino's 16 points. Marcus Sonoga provided 11 points, and Michael Nardone put in 10.
Struthers (4-11) committed 22 turnovers and couldn't dig out of the early deficit. Ray'Quan Phifer paced the Wildcats with 15.
DEER LAKES 43, SPRINGFIELD 33: YOUNGSTOWN - J.J. Kowalowski and Tom Jaczesko combined to score 33 of Deer Lakes' 43 points in a non-conference win.
Jaczesko poured in 19 and Kowalowski added 14 for the Lancers (10-5), who slowly pulled away from the Tigers in the second annual Lariccia's See Them Rise High School Basketball Showcase at the Covelli Centre.
Springfield (10-3) trailed, 19-15, at the half, and 31-25 after three quarters. The Tigers received a strong effort from Eoghan Bees, who scored 15 points. Jared McTigue added 10 points and nine rebounds.
HUDSON 52, EAST 48: YOUNGSTOWN - Hudson used a big third-quarter run to edge East in a non-conference battle that was part of the second annual Lariccia's See Them Rise High School Basketball Showcase at the Covelli Centre.
Hudson (9-4) outscored the Panthers, 16-8, to erase a two-point halftime deficit. The Explorers' Steven Boslet led all scores with 20 points. Zack Brandy registered 12.
East (10-5) took the lead with a 12-6 third-quarter advantage, but the Panthers were outscored 30-24 in the second half. Taylor Johnson paced East with 18 points, and Terrell McClain added 12. Johnson hit four 3-pointers, and McClain sank three from long range.
Wrestling
STATE?WRESTLING?DUELS COMING?TO?HOWLAND AND?CANFIELD:?Howland and Canfield High Schools will be hosting the first two rounds of the 2013 OHSAA Division II, Region 11 Wrestling Team Tournament on Wednesday.
Howland, a No. 1 seed, has a bye in the first round and will face the winner of Hoban (No. 8) and Streetsboro (No. 9), which takes place at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Howland's match begins 20 minutes after the conclusion of Hoban and Streetsboro.
Canfield, a No. 3 seed, also received a bye. The Cardinals face the winner of Salem (No. 11) and Poland (No. 6), which begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Canfield's match begins 20 minutes after Poland and Salem.
The team tournament is in its first year of existence in Ohio.
