WARREN - The Trumbull County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, 345 High St N.E., is seeking applicants to take part in the first-time homeowner program.

The nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry has volunteers construct new homes or refurbish homes for families.

The Rev. Brian Byrne, president of the local chapter, said volunteers and supporters help with the work along with the person who will receive the home through "sweat equity."

He said there are currently three houses in Warren being worked on by the volunteers under the guidance of project manager Jim Garland. He said there also are four homes that were done whose former residents have left for various reasons.

"The economy is difficult, and we have had some homes Habitat worked on in foreclosure because the families have left and not paid the mortgage," Bryne said.

To date, the local habitat has worked on 33 homes and received assistance from both high school and adult students in the building trades programs at Trumbull Career and Technical Center.

"We are looking for families who want to be part of the program. We want to help people get a home," he said.

For information on applications and interest-free mortgages and payment system, call the chapter at 330-395-1524.
