Girls basketball

POSTSEASON

WESTERN RESERVE 49, LEETONIA 44: CANFIELD - Western Reserve trailed but was able to bounce back for the win.

Western Reserve trailed by four points going into the fourth quarter, then outscored Leetonia 17-8 in the final frame.

April Lude scored 15 for Western Reserve and Lauren Falasca added nine. Emily Schneider led Leetonia with 13 points.

With a win against Leetonia in the Division IV sectional semifinals, Western Reserve advances to the sectional finals to face Lowellville.

The game will be played Thursday, Feb. 21, at South Range High School. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.

TWINSBURG 79, YOUNGSTOWN EAST 28: AKRON - Twinsburg led 34-3 after the first quarter and was able to breeze past East.

Twinsburg's Ashley Morrisette scored 17 and Brooke Smith scored 16. Ashlyn Baker led East with 13 points.

With the win in the Division I sectional semifinal, Twinsburg moves on to face Warren G. Harding in the sectional finals.

The game is Thursday, Feb. 21, at Ellet High School. Tip-off begins at 6 p.m.

BOARDMAN 52, AUSTINTOWN FITCH 42: AKRON - Boardman led 17-8 after the first quarter and was able to get past Fitch for the victory.

Boardman's Emily Gibbs was the game's leading scorer with 16. Kelly Tomcsanyi added 15 for the Spartans. Cassie Custer poured in 14 points for Fitch.

With the Division I sectional semifinal victory, Boardman will go on to face Aurora in the sectional finals.

The game will be played Thursday, Feb. 21, at Ellet High School. Game time starts at 7:45 p.m.

GIRARD 52, LaBRAE 48: MINERAL RIDGE - Girard jumped out to a 20-10 first-quarter lead and never looked back.

Girard's Bree Bishop led the team with 14 points. Hayley Spalla and Miranda Boyle each added 11 points for the Indians. Ashlee Stubbs posted a double-double - scoring 14 points and snatching 10 rebounds.

With the win in the Division III sectional semifinals, Girard will take on Ursuline in the sectional finals.

The game will be played Saturday, Feb. 23, at Mineral Ridge High School. Tip-off begins at 6 p.m.

CHAMPION 66, GRAND VALLEY 48: MINERAL RIDGE - Champion's Mackenzie Kiser's performance helped Champion cruise by Grand Valley.

Kiser recorded a double-double - scoring 25 and grabbing 15 rebounds. Jordyn Skaggs scored 12 and dished out seven assists.

Jess Vormelker and Chris Futty each scored 16 for Grand Valley.

With the win in the Division III sectional semifinal, Champion will face Newton Falls in the sectional finals.

The game will be played Thursday, Feb. 21, at Mineral Ridge High School. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

CRESTVIEW 45, MINERAL RIDGE 38: CANFIELD - Crestview's balanced scoring attack helped lead it past Mineral Ridge.

Six players scored for Crestview and was led by Anna Hardenbrook, who scored 11. Alyssa Harkins dropped 13 points for Mineral Ridge.

With a win against Mineral Ridge in the Division IV sectional semifinals, Crestview advances to the sectional finals to face Southern.

The game will be played Thursday, Feb. 21, at South Range High School. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.

LOWELLVILLE 62, SEBRING 31: CANFIELD - Lowellville led from the first quarter and never relinquished the lead.

Lowellville had a 17-10 advantage after the first quarter and padded its lead by outscoring Sebring 17-6 in the second quarter.

Kaye Solak netted 20 for points for Lowellville and Maddie Opritza scored 12. Sebring's Kelsi Settle scored 18.

With a win against Sebring in the Division IV sectional semifinals, Lowellville advances to the sectional finals to face Western Reserve.

The game will be played Thursday, Feb. 21, at South Range High School. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.

PYMATUNING VALLEY 60, EAST PALESTINE 38: MINERAL RIDGE -Pymatuning Valley used a big third quarter to put the game out of reach for East Palestine

PV led 28-24 at halftime, then outscored East Palestine 19-4 in the third quarter to increase its lead.

Kelsea Brown scored 20 for PV, Geena Gabriel added 16 and Megan Stech chipped in with 13. Courtney Weber led East Palestine with 14.

With the win in the Division III sectional semifinal, Pymatuning Valley will face Springfield in the sectional finals.

The game will be played Thursday, Feb. 21, at Mineral Ridge High School. Tip-off starts at 6 p.m.

REGULAR?SEASON

SOUTHINGTON 39, NEWBURY 35: SOUTHINGTON - Southington tallied the win as Newbury struggled from the free-throw line.

Newbury shot just 9 of 24 from the free-throw line, and Southington used an 18-4 run in the third quarter to obtain the lead.

Brittany Sherwood scored 10 points for Southington, Amber Dietz added eight. Newbury's Walsh scored 12 and Iden added 11 points.

Boys basketball

Regular season

AKRON ST. VINCENT-ST. MARY 71, URSULINE 60: YOUNGSTOWN - Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary handled Ursuline to earn the road victory.

Desmond McElroy led Ursuline with 21 points, hitting three 3-pointers on the evening. Ryan Strollo added 14.

Jalen Hudson led SV-SM with 18 points and V.J. King added 17. Nick Wells notched a double double, scoring 15 and grabbing 10 rebounds.

BROOKFIELD 64, SPRINGFIELD 57: NEW MIDDLETOWN - Jeremy Quinlan shined for Brookfield as the Warriors beat Springfield.

Brookfield trailed 16-11 after the first quarter, then the Warriors outscored Springfield 20-4 in the second quarter to take the lead.

Quinlan scored 28 points, 18 of the points coming on six 3-pointers. Ryan Mosora netted 12 for the Warriors. Eoghan Bees scored 20 for Springfield and Jared McTigue chipped in with 14.

MAPLEWOOD 46, BADGER 43: BADGER - Maplewood was able to obtain the victory in close-knit game.

Badger led by one point with 2:30 left in the fourth quarter. Maplewood's Luke Urchek and Nate Spitler hit 3-pointers in the closing minutes to eventually help knock off the Braves.

Ethan O'Bradovich scored 10 for Maplewood and Spitler scored nine. Brandon Bates scored 17 for Badger and Jason Lipps scored 14, hitting four 3-pointers on the night.

Wrestling

Boardman's Nick Mancini (113 pounds) and Mario Graziani (132) each claimed titles for the Spartans. Justin Humphreys placed second at 220, and Peter Ryan was runner-up at 126. Joe Cordova came in third at 182 pounds.

Fitch's Zach Mackall (145) and Camran Rezapourian (170) each placed second. Mike Hafley finished third at 138.

Boardman placed sixth as a team with 133.5, and Fitch was seventh at 128.

Moving on for the Blue Jays are Mitch Tikkanen (second, 106 pounds), Terry Stockton (third, 113), Devin Seka (second, 120), Joe Burnside (third, 132), Tyler Staton (third (138), Tyler Jeffries (third, 145) and Corley Lamb (third, 285). Jackson-Milton finished with 140.5 points.

Girard crowned two sectional champions in Zane Chase (120 pounds) and James Cupan (160) and placed fourth as a team with 127 points. Liberty advanced four wrestlers in Brandon Jefferson (second, 145), Tyrell Jethrow (second, 152), Cody BuCher (fourth, 220) and Danaryll Green (fourth, 285).

Brookfield had three wrestlers qualify. David Jamieson (second, 220), Zach Jamieson (fourth, 160) and Zach Hackett (fourth, 195) advanced for the Warriors.
