CORTLAND - Douglas L. Planitz, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Hospice House in Poland, following a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 21, 1934, in Cincinnati, the son of David Albert and Selma Helen Langhout Planitz.
He and his wife, Shirley, moved to Cortland in 1972 from Cincinnati.

Doug was a graduate of Deer Park High School in Cincinnati and attended Heidelberg College in Tiffin.
He served in the Navy Reserves from 1953 to 1961.
Doug retired after 26 years of service as a millwright at General Motors in Lordstown.
Doug was a member of St. Robert's Church in Cortland. He was an avid Ohio State sports fan and enjoyed traveling, especially going on cruises.
Surviving are two sons, David R. (Susan) Planitz of Cortland and Michael Planitz of Columbus; one daughter, Jennifer L. (Craig) Clatanoff of Rio Rancho, N.M.; two grandsons, Andrew Planitz and Calvyn Clatanoff; one granddaughter, Cara Clatanoff; and one sister, Helen Parker of Lebanon, Ohio.
His wife, Shirley Jane Williams Planitz, whom he married Aug. 17, 1957, preceded him in death March 3, 2008. One brother, David Planitz also preceded in death.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel in Cortland and one hour prior to the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Robert's Catholic Church, where the Rev. Carl Kish will celebrate the Mass.
Burial will be at All Souls Cemetery in Bazetta.
