John F. Kennedy High School's Chad and Carl Zallow knew this could be a special week for them.
Both of them have been running well all indoor season, figuring in the top five in their respective events.
Saturday, at the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches State Indoor Track and Field Meet, the brothers combined to bring home a state team runner-up trophy in Divisions II-III at the Stile Field House on the University of Akron campus.
Eastwood edged Kennedy, 36-33.
"We had high expectations this week," Chad said. "It gave us motivation for the outdoor season. It's a good thing to have."
Chad started off with a win in the 60-meter hurdles (8.06 seconds).

"I knew I had a lot of competition coming in. I came out the blocks really fast," he said.
Speaking of fast, Maplewood's Wyatt Hartman is off to a quick start in the Division II-III 800 - winning in a time of 1:57.22.
"It's definitely a huge confidence booster this early in the year," Hartman said. "It's a really good start to the season."
He and Derek Morrison, Mike Dahmen and Solomon Yoder won the 4x800 relay in a time of 8:10.13. The time might have qualified the relay for next month's Penn Relays. Teams had to run an 8:14 to be considered.
"A good thing for us is experience," Hartman said. "We had to come from behind to win. This will help us in tournaments and bigger meets, knowing how to respond. Last year, we didn't get under 8:12 until county.
"We have a lot of talent. It's going to be an exciting year."
Then, Girard's girls kept pace in the Division II-III 4x400 relay - placing first in a time of 4:07.86. The team of Tina Boyles, Justine Kagy, Taylor Harshbarger and Destiny Hall led the way.
The Indians didn't slow up as they took second in the 4x200 relay (1:47.11). Kagy, Harshbarger, Caitlyn Trebella and Alexis Cloud led this relay.
Staying in the same division, Ursuline's Lavonte Powell won the 400 (59.31).
Also, LaBrae's Megan Gunther took third in the 60 hurdles (10.3).
In Division I, Austintown Fitch's Gabby Figueroa set a new standard with 56 feet. It was a new state meet record and breaking her own Stile Field House mark she set on Jan. 19 of 53-9.50.
On the boys' side, teammates Billy Price placed second in the weight throw (69-10).
Girard's Edie Svonavec placed second in the Division II-III shot put (42-6.50).
Also in Division I, Austintown Fitch's 4x200 of Joe Harrington, Nathan Bowlen, Gary Gibson and Darrin Hall took second (1:29.58), Fitch's Sam Ortz was third in the 60 hurdles (7.18), and Boardman's Mark Hadley was second in the 1,600 (4:12.80).
In Division II-III, South Range's Tim Nichols took third in the 3,200 (9:43.28).
Carl, meanwhile, was recovering from a hamstring injury earlier this indoor season. He was to run the 200 and the 4x400 relay.
It was a race-time decision, but he ran the 60. He took third and ran a personal best time of 6.96.
"It's a great accomplishment," Carl said. "Thanks to coach (Robert) Andrews with the indoor season. Not many coaches would take the time to do that and allowing me to run the 60."
Today's accolades are something the brothers and the Kennedy team can build upon for the impending outdoor season.
"This is something we can build on," Carl said. "It's a nice accomplishment. It's something we want to at outdoor state when it's all said and done."
