WARREN - Some of the memorial that was erected at the site of the single-vehicle accident that killed six teenagers was burned about 2:30 a.m. Monday.

Warren Assistant fire Chief Dan Suttles said the department responded to a call along Niles Warren River Road about the fire and put it out with about 200 gallons of water.

"We do not know what caused the fire," Suttles said. "We do not know if it was purposely set or something else happened. We have been told there were some candles placed at the site."

Warren resident Heath-er Shuman said she went the Niles Warren River Road S.E. crash site after attending one of the victim's funerals Monday.

"My daughter wanted to place a bear there," Shuman said. "When we arrived, Warren firefighters were there cleaning it up."

Shuman said she and several others decided to take much of what was left to the gravesites of the five young people already buried and will take some of the memorial items left for Ramone J. White to his gravesite later today.

More than $35,000 donated

Tribune Chronicle

WARREN - More than $35,000 has been donated to the "Gifts for our Children" bank account set up to help the families of the six teenagers killed in a March 10 auto accident in Howland.

Warren City Council President Bob Dean said donations to the account came from across the country.

"It is amazing that much money was collected since March 12 when the account was set up," Dean said on Monday. "I've never seen anything like this."

Money from the account is paying for vaults and gravestones for the accident victims.

Other donations offered for the families by area businesses were caskets, funeral programs and cemetery plots.

"If someone did this on purpose, they are truly sick," Shuman said. "It is a disgusting thing to do."
