BOARDMAN - Warren businessman Sam Covelli, being honored Thursday for his Mahoning Valley spirit, turned the attention from himself to other volunteers and donors who devote themselves to worthy local projects.

Covelli was one of three area leaders being honored for their roles in making the Mahoning Valley a better place. Also honored were North Lima businessman David N. Hughes and Youngstown Mayor Charles Sammarone.

"I see so many volunteers that do good work and so many people who give generously of their time," Covelli said in his acceptance speech. "It's absolutely amazing to me how much passion people have for this place that we call home. It really makes me proud to have my home and headquarters here."

Covelli operates restaurants under the nameplates of Panera Bread, O'Charley's and Dairy Queen. He said he expects to open his 250th Panera Bread location in Boardman by the end of this year.

"I wouldn't want to live or run my business anywhere else in the world," he said.
