MECCA - Floyd J. Barzak, 88, died peacefully Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Gillette Nursing Home in Warren.
He was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Warren, the son of the late Lewis M. and Ethel Scott Barzak.
Floyd grew up in Warren, going to school at Warren G. Harding.
Mr. Barzak was very proud to be a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II. He served from 1943 to1945 in Europe, North Africa and Asia as a gunner seaman first class on a cargo ship.
He enjoyed coaching little league baseball in his younger years in Johnston and Mecca townships. He was an avid gardener and sports fan.
He was a member of West Mecca United Methodist Church and retired from LTV Steel in 1986.
He will be deeply missed by his family and friends: his wife of 68 years, the former June Pierce, whom he married on June 6, 1945; his children, Jim (Sue) Barzak, Carol (William) Harrison and Joe Barzak, all of Mecca; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings, Donald Barzak of Johnston, Arnold Barzak of Warren and Frances Sigler of Newton Falls.
Other than his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by a son, John Barzak, and one sister, Ida Laughlin.
Per Mr. Barzak's wishes, he will be cremated and there will not be any calling hours or services.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel in Cortland.
