HOWLAND - Mary Adele Butler, 85, of Howland, died Saturday evening, Sept. 14, 2013, at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland.
She was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Warren, the daughter of George and Ida Spahr Dienstbier. She was a lifetime Warren-Howland resident.
Mary graduated from St. Mary School and was a 1946 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. She began working for Dr. Snelson while continuing her education in dental assisting at Warren Business College and received her degree from Kent State University. She was responsible for creating and developing the dental assistant program at Choffin Career Center in Youngstown, where she taught for over 20 years.
She was also honored at Choffin with the teacher of the year award. Over the years, Mary served in all offices of the Warren Dental Assistants Society.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Warren. Mary was proud that she was named after her aunt, Sister Mary Adele, who was a nun at Notre Dame in Cleveland.
She had enjoyed spending time with her husband Fred at their cottage in Geneva-on-the-Lake.
Her husband, Frederick Butler, whom she married Feb. 19, 1955, preceded her in death July 24, 1991. Two sisters, Kass Dienstbier and Nancy Adams, her brother-in-law, John Adams, and her brother, George Dienstbier have also all preceded her in death.
Mary is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren, where the family will greet friends prior to the service.
Rev. Bernard Schmalzried will officiate.
Burial will be in Kerr Cemetery in Weathersfield.
