CORTLAND - Isobel A. Williams, 97, of Cortland, passed away Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, at Lake Vista Retirement Center in Cortland.
She was born Feb. 28, 1916, the daughter of Leo and Margaret Gorman Teachout of Youngstown.
Isobel spent her entire life among family and friends in northeast Ohio. She and her husband Tom moved to Cortland in 1951.
One of Isobel's proudest accomplishments was as a founding member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Cortland. Shortly after arriving in Cortland, she began the process to establish a parish to serve Cortland and nearby communities.
The church began first as a mission with services in the local movie theater utilizing a portable altar. Many days and letters finally led to the purchase of the land where St. Robert's now stands.
Innumerable hours of volunteer labor and donations saw the humble structure rise from the field. Today the church, with approximately 1,000 families, stands as a living sign of the vibrant Catholic Community in the area.
Isobel loved life and her family. Countless hours were spent at family gatherings at the "farm" on Route 46, where brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews gathered for fun and games.
In her later years, she and Tom found many new friends at Lake Vista Retirement Center. Isobel greatly appreciated the many close friends she and Tom shared at Lake Vista.
Isobel is survived by her sons, Thomas Jr. (Betty) of Hartford and Robert (Joyce) of South Bend, Ind. She had three grandchildren, Jeremy, Lara and Katharine of South Bend, Ind., and one great-grandchild, Cecilia of South Bend. Also surviving are a sister, Nancy (Kachur), and brother, Richard.
Her beloved husband, Thomas, preceded her in death in 2010. Their 71-year marriage was a loving testament to their devotion to each other. She was also preceded in passing by her daughter, Marge Ann, and siblings, Ellen (Anthonson), Marge (Landers), Leo, George, Rita (Dell), Norbert, Robert, Alfred and Victor.
As a final service to the community, Isobel's body was donated for medical research to NEOMED, Northeast Ohio Medical University.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Dec. 14 at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Cortland. Lunch will follow the Mass.
Memorial donations can be made to St. Robert Catholic Church, 4659 Niles Cortland Road, Cortland, OH 44410, or Senior Independence Hospice in Cortland.
