BRACEVILLE Two people were injured and hundreds were left without power Christmas night in the Newton Falls / Braceville area when a car crashed into a utility pole about 6:14 p.m. today on Route 534 just north of Route 5.
The 17-year-old driver of a 2005 Chevy Cobalt missed a curve on Route 534, slid off the right side of road and rolled over, striking the guy wire and ripping off the top of the utility pole, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The 20-year-old passenger was flown by helicopter to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna and treated for a fractured vertebrae, according to the patrol. The driver complained of a stiff neck and was treated at Robinson, a trooper said.
Neither alcohol nor speed were factors in the crash, according to the patrol. Names of the driver and passenger were not yet released.
Ohio Edison spokesman David Turner said at least 100 customers were without power for about two hours, and few would be without power for the rest of the evening until the utility pole was replaced and power transferred.
According to the trooper, traffic signals and lights along most of Route 534 in the area were knocked out.
