AUSTINTOWN - A Warren man is in custody after wielding a box cutter during a bar fight and threatening to kill a police officer early Thursday.
Police responding about 2:30 a.m. Thursday to a report of a fight at Bill's Place, 4771 Mahoning Ave., found Bruce Von Bergen, 32, of 1797 Lexington Ave., and Jonah Donahue, 33, of Youngstown, wrestling on the sidewalk.
During the tussle, Von Bergen lost his grip on an orange-handled box cutter. Donahue later said Von Bergen had been attempting to cut him and other bar patrons.
Von Bergen struggled during his arrest and then refused to sit in a patrol car.
"I'm not getting in. I'm from Warren, and we don't put up with this ...," Von Bergen said according to reports.
Despite his reported profanities and resistance, police were able to get Von Bergen, who smelled of alcohol, into the cruiser, police said.
Donahue told police that Von Bergen began throwing punches inside the bar, so he and the bouncer escorted Von Bergen outside where he pulled out the box cutter.
A second witness said Von Bergen had pulled a switchblade out and charged at people on the sidewalk.
While being transported to the Austintown Police Department on charges of felonious assault and aggravated menacing, Von Bergen threatened the officer who was driving the cruiser, saying he would kill him in front of his family. He also attempted to kick out the window of the cruiser. After being booked, Von Bergen continued to threaten officers while being transported to the Mahoning County Jail.
Von Bergen is facing a count of felonious assault, two counts of aggravated menacing and one count of resisting arrest. He remained jailed Thursday night on $15,500 bond.
