Mon, 7:39 pm: Police investigate home invasion

NILES -- City police are investigating a home invasion that left a 65-year-old woman hurt this morning.

Police were called to a home on North Butler Avenue around 5 a.m. The woman told them she heard someone smash the window of the back door to the kitchen and grabbed a small handgun, reports state. The woman told police she came face to face with an individual who grabbed the gun from her and beat her with it several times before taking the handgun with him as he fled.

Police said the assailant was dressed in all black and was wearing a black scarf over his face. However, he is believed to be a white male between 6 foot 2 inches tall and 6 foot 4 inches tall. Police said he got away with the woman's cell phone and handgun.
