WARREN - Darby Gene Vaughn, 74, of 3510 Tod Ave. N.W., Warren, died at 7:18 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
Darby was born Dec. 24, 1939, in Warren, the son of Leo and Gladys DeFoor Vaughn.
He graduated from Warren G. Harding High School and in 1958 he joined the U.S. Army.
He was employed as a deputy for the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office for 36 years, retiring in June 2000. He then worked for Sibley-Murray-Wellington Funeral Home in Alliance.
He was a member of Grace AME Church in Warren and enjoyed traveling, shopping and dressing.
Darby served as Past Worshipful Master of King Solomon Lodge 87, Past R.W. chief of grand security and made R.W. chief emeritus 2013 of M.W.P.H.G.L., F.A. &M. State of Ohio. He was also a member of Bazeleel Consistory No. 15, El Hasa Temple 28, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Nobles of the Mystic Shine Inc., 33rd Mason of the United Supreme Council, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Prince Hall Affiliation, Northern Jurisdiction, USA, Inc., and the Turtles Association. He was also honored as Mason of the Year.
Darby married the former Lessie Ray Dukes on April 18, 1981.
He is survived by one son, Darby Eric (Tameka) Vaughn of Cleveland; three daughters, Cassandra Renee Vaughn Ware of Warren, Sherry Patricia Vaughn Thomas of Akron and Katrina Washington of Warren; two stepsons, Aaron Keith Dukes of Pennsylvania and Johnny (Julie) Dukes of North Carolina; two stepdaughters, Latonya (Antoine) Williamson and Sheri Dukes, both of Warren; three brothers, Charles Vaughn and Kenneth (Sandra) Vaughn, both of Cleveland, and Jan Reid of Warren; honorary sister, Peggy Vaughn Brown of Georgia; sister-in-law, Queenie Dukes of Warren; godsister, Beverly Clark Brown of Leavittsburg; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lessie Ray Vaughn; and brothers Leon Vaughn Sr. and Robert Vaughn Sr.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Grace AME Church.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to services Friday, at the Grace AME Church, with the Rev. Gina Thornton as pastor. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The Sibley-Murray-Wellington Funeral is in charge of arrangements.
