JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Wilda "Billie" Marie Martin, 88, died after a short illness on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, with her daughters at her side in Mayo Clinic Hospital, Jacksonville, Fla.
Known as "Billie" or "Bobber" to family and friends, she was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Youngstown, the youngest child of James F. Stanton Sr. and Florence Vickery Stanton.
After graduating from South High School, Billie attended Youngstown Business School.
While working as a typist at U.S. Steel in McDonald, she met her husband, Edgar "Eddie" Martin. They were married in 1947 and moved to Champion Heights, a suburb of Warren, where they had a very happy marriage for almost 50 years.
Billie's stay-at-home Mom years were spent volunteering. For many years, she assisted the school nurse with hearing testing. She was involved in Girl Scouts for 12 years, becoming the leader for Senior Girl Scout Troop 71. One of her highlights was taking them to Washington, D.C., in January 1961 for President Kennedy's inauguration.
Billie volunteered for the Red Cross as a Gray Lady at the local hospital and transporting cancer patients and was on the altar guild at Christ Episcopal Church in Warren. She enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels in Warren and later in Jacksonville Beach.
After taking bookkeeping classes, Billie worked part-time for 20 years as a bookkeeper and typist for attorneys MacQueen and MacQueen in Niles.
Billie moved to Pablo Towers in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., in 2001 where she continued to help others, driving friends to appointments, errands and outings, without calling attention to herself.
She also loved traveling, especially to see family; followed golf avidly; and was a lifelong Cleveland Indians fan.
If there could be a career called ''caring,'' Billie would have been at the top of the field. She was listener, confidante, and advice giver, always discreet in what was confided to her. She embraced the entire blended multi-generational family, keeping in touch with everyone. She wrapped her love around the family and was the "glue" that held the family together.
Family members include daughters, Faith Martin of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Sharon Martin (Bill Calder) of Pittsburgh; grandsons, Jim (Amy) Bugos and Brian (Billie) Bugos, both of Warren; four great-grandchildren, Brayden, Aftyn, Julia and Joey; stepdaughter, Joy Sweet (Charlie) of Long Neck, Del.; 18 stepgrandchildren; 43 stepgreat-grandchildren; 26 stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mom, Bobber, Billie, Bill - Wilda will be greatly missed by both family and her many friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edgar, parents, brother and sister, three stepdaughters and two stepgrandchildren.
