WARREN About 5,600 FirstEnergy customers in Trumbull County still are without power tonight, a spokesman for the company reported shortly after 11 p.m. In Mahoning County, those without electricity numbered around 4,200 at the same time.

About an hour earlier, power company spokesman David Turner reported that about 5,200 customers lost power.

The cause apparently is weather-related but has not been pinpointed, he said. Temperatures are about 11 degrees below zero.

A motorist traveling along Salt Springs Road near Interstate 80 about 9:30 p.m. reported seeing the sky light up in a blue flash, as if a transformer blew, then lights went out.

In Trumbull County, Turner said, the largest concentration of customer powerless was in Girard, McDonald and Weathersfield, which with 2,100 without electricity, was the most among 5,000 powerless in those three communities. The rest were scattered among other communities, Turner said.

A dispatcher at the Trumbull County 911 Center said residents in Liberty and Girard also were experiencing outages.

Turner could not say when power might be restored.

In Mahoning County, there were about 2,000 First Energy customers in Austintown and another 1,500 or so in Youngstown without power, Turner said. Like in Trumbull County, the rest without power are scattered around the county.

Turner said warming centers were available at the Boardman Township administrative building, 8299 Market St., and the Austintown Senior Center, 100 Westchester Drive. He did not know tonight if similar centers were being made available in Trumbull County.
