Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown on Wednesday announced his plan to increase the federal minimum wage for tipped workers.
Federal tipped minimum wage is $2.13 an hour, 29 percent of the regular minimum wage. Brown is a cosponsor of the Fair Minimum Wage Act, which would gradually raise tipped minimum wage to 70 percent of regular minimum wage. It also would increase regular minimum wage to $10.10 an hour from its current $7.25, and index it to inflation.
The resolution has 16 cosponsors. There are approximately 3.3 million U.S. workers. About 60 percent of them are restaurant servers.
